Keynote Address by Dr. Leslie Sponsel

Dr. Leslie E. Sponsel is a Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Hawaii and the author of numerous books, journal articles, book chapters.  His book Spiritual Ecology: A Quiet Revolution, won the Green Book Award science category in 2014. Dr. Sponsel's specializations include spiritual and Buddhist ecology, biodiversity studies in relation to cultural diversity, cultural ecology, historical ecology, and sacred places, anthropological aspects of peace studies and war studies, advocacy anthropology and human rights, and professional ethics

Responses to the keynote address by:

Puanani Burgess is a Zen priest, community building facilitator, family, and cultural values, with environmental sustainability-based economic development. She is also a poet and cultural translator as well as an activist and a board member of the Positive Futures Network, Feeds the hunger Fund and The Kohala Center. She is one of the 2009 Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii Living Treasure Honorees.

Karma Lekshe Tsomo is a Buddhist nun, scholar, and social activist. She is a professor of Religious Studies at the University of San Diego.  She is co-founder of the Sakyadhita International Association of Buddhist Women and the founding director of the Jamyang Foundation, which supports the education of women and girls in the Himalayan region, the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, and elsewhere.  She is currently working to create Lai'i Peace Center as a resource for peace education, Buddhist studies, and community service programs under the auspices of Sakyadhita Hawai'i.

Doug Codiga is an attorney and member of the Honolulu Diamond Sangha. His law practice is in the areas of energy and environmental law, with an emphasis on regulatory and administrative proceedings and dispute resolution.  Doug founded Hawaii's first Climate and Sustainability Law Practice Group in 2007 and frequently publishes and lectures on clean energy and climate change law and policy in Hawaii and the Asia Pacific region.

HAIB's 2022 Annual Membership Meeting will follow the Earth Day program 2:30 – 3:00 PM.  All HAIB members and Earth Day program attendees are invited to stay online for the short membership meeting.  2022 is HAIB's 30th Anniversary year and we have special events planned for each month. During the annual meeting, we will hear from HAIB president Michael Kieran and various HAIB Board members about HAIB's 30th Anniversary event and each of the special monthly events that are coming up. Please plan to attend.
